EPPM1013 Digital Business Week 2 Topic 4: The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Digital Business

Regarding Topic 4: AI Route Optimization——Grab Driver’s Multiplatform Order Acceptance Strategy

My roommate and I met a Chinese driver on Grab when we were taking a taxi on our way home after a massage. Perhaps due to the Friday afternoon, there were particularly many cars on the road. While stuck in traffic, we started chatting with the driver. During our chat, we learned how he maximized his income by using multiple taxi-hailing platforms simultaneously.

First of all, Google Maps will intelligently plan temporary routes based on the points the driver passes through, and switch between different platforms according to time periods and regions. On rainy days, Lalamove delivery orders are given priority. Sometimes, it is also used to pick up and drop off passengers. Delivering goods and passengers can be carried out simultaneously. Indrive is used to pick up drivers' custom prices during peak traffic jams. Grab is the most commonly used taxi-hailing app. It never lacks passengers at any time, and the real-time taxi-hailing price will also spiral up with the number of users. Therefore, for safety reasons, we suggest that drivers divide their order-taking time into morning, afternoon and evening, and only pick up and drop off passengers from one platform during different time periods. This way, the safety of both drivers and passengers can be guaranteed simultaneously, and no potential safety hazards will arise.

However, in fact, the multi-platform management brought about by such intelligent optimization will inevitably lead to distraction, posing certain security risks when accepting orders and there is a certain probability that it will cause unnecessary trouble for passengers.

Business application: This is related to the AI optimization in our Topic4. AI route optimization has facilitated users to a certain extent. This makes me think that in fact, the platform strategy choices of gig economy practitioners like Grab drivers are actually quite worthy of study. Using Google Maps navigation for edge computing and AI route optimization can maximize economic benefits, facilitating both drivers and passengers.
